Sullivan has a keen sensitivity to the needs, expectations, and anxieties of the patient, and this is used by him to explore the whole field of interpersonal relationships, and to enable the patient to develop his more healthy features. There is no coercion, and the interpersonal relationships, between Sullivan and his patients are rather like those of a good gardener and his plants.
